One glass, and before you know it, you’re a man

Legendary spirit Captain Q returns after 11 years

“One glass, and before you know it, you’re a man.”

That line from a 1980s Captain Q advertisement is drawing attention again more than 46 years later.

Lotte Chilsung Beverage announced that it is relaunching Captain Q, which helped popularize spirits in South Korea after its debut in 1980, as an authentic Caribbean rum, 11 years after it was discontinued in 2015.

At the time, Captain Q combined a relatively low price with a rich flavor, surpassing 10 million bottles sold within a year of its launch. In 1985, it introduced a portable 180 mL pocket-sized product, cementing its place as a popular spirits brand in the 1980s and 1990s.

But strong sales were not the only reason Captain Q was remembered for so long.

As stories spread of its strong alcohol aroma and the hangovers it caused, jokes arose that “one drink and you wake up two days later” and that it was “a drink that leaves you without a hangover the next day.” Such anecdotes continued to circulate through videos and social media even after the product was discontinued.

Over time, the once-popular spirit became a cultural memory and an internet legend.

The same green bottle, different contents

The most notable change in Captain Q’s relaunch is how it is made.

When Captain Q first launched in 1980, it was made by blending a rum base with neutral spirits. From 1991, however, the rum base was removed and rum flavoring and other ingredients were added to neutral spirits instead, making the product different from authentic rum.

The returning Captain Q, by contrast, uses authentic Caribbean rum. It is first aged in bourbon casks—oak barrels previously used to age bourbon whiskey—then aged further in PX sherry casks.

Lotte Chilsung Beverage said the process creates a deep flavor and a sweet, smooth taste. The bottle retains the dark green color and shape associated with the original Captain Q, preserving the brand’s distinctive identity.

Authentic rum for 9,900 won, plus a limited-edition treasure chest

The relaunched Captain Q comes in a 360 mL bottle with an alcohol content of 35% and a reported price of 9,900 won.

To mark the relaunch, a limited-edition “Captain Q Treasure Chest” will also be released, built around the idea that Captain Q has returned from an 11-year voyage with 1,980 treasures.

A total of 12,000 limited-edition sets will be produced. Each includes two bottles of Captain Q, a dedicated stainless-steel cup and a commemorative coin. Of those, 1,980 sets—symbolizing 1980, the year the brand first launched—will contain a commemorative coin made of approximately 1.5 don of pure silver.

Convenience store chain CU plans to sell the limited-edition set for 19,800 won. Stock will begin arriving at stores in stages from October 13, with official sales starting on the 14th. Deliveries to Jeju are scheduled to begin on the 16th.

Lotte Chilsung Beverage hopes the relaunch will bring nostalgia to consumers who remember Captain Q and offer a new experience to younger people encountering the brand for the first time.

Captain Q once defined an era with the line “One glass, and before you know it, you’re a man.” Attention is now turning to how it will be received as an authentic rum, beyond the memories of its past.
