The 25 Million Won That Never Found Its Owner

The 25 million won in cash found in a garbage bag dumped in a residential neighborhood in Incheon has gone to the person who found it after its owner never came forward.

According to Incheon’s Jemulpo Police Station, the cash was found on February 10 in a 20-liter pay-as-you-throw garbage bag dumped next to a residential building in Geumgok-dong, Jemulpo-gu.

A, who was collecting used clothing at the time, reported the money to police immediately after finding it. Police then publicized the find through the national lost-and-found portal and daily newspapers, and posted notices near where the money was found, but its owner never came forward.

Under the Lost Articles Act, the finder gains ownership of a lost item if its owner does not claim it within six months of a public notice.

When no owner came forward after six months, police reportedly followed the required procedures and transferred 19.23 million won to A’s account—the amount remaining from the 25 million won after taxes, newspaper advertising costs and other expenses were deducted.
