New York’s Engineered Garments and Tokyo’s GU have unveiled their third collaborative collection, a fall/winter 2026 lineup that reinterprets the practicality of workwear and military wear as everyday city clothing.

Fashion with More Freedom: GU
GU is a fashion brand that, alongside Uniqlo, represents Japan’s Fast Retailing Group. Since its founding in 2006, it has grown by focusing on trend-conscious designs at reasonable prices.
The brand’s name comes from “jiyū,” the Japanese word for “freedom.” Its message, “Fashion with More Freedom,” reflects a philosophy of helping people enjoy fashion on their own terms, without being constrained by price or prescribed styles.
Though the two brands belong to the same group, they take distinctly different approaches to clothing.
While Uniqlo focuses on functional, comfortable, timeless basics under its “LifeWear” concept, GU responds quickly to changing trends, offering new silhouettes and designs at more accessible prices.
GU carries this approach into its collaborations with other fashion brands, offering people an accessible way to experience designers’ distinctive aesthetics in everyday life.

Daily Expedition

The collection’s theme, “Daily Expedition,” begins with the idea of seeing routine journeys and everyday activities in the city as an adventure, rather than traveling to a special destination.
Engineered Garments, which leads the collection, is a brand through which designer Daiki Suzuki has given classic American workwear and military wear a modern interpretation. It is known for carefully designed patterns and pocket placement, and for distinctive design within practical constructions.
The brands’ first collaboration, launched last December, was well received, with some pieces selling out soon after release. A second collection followed in April this year, leading to this fall/winter season’s offering.
An article on the third collaboration topped Japanese fashion publication WWD JAPAN’s weekly readership rankings, among other signs of considerable interest in the collection ahead of its official release.
This season’s lineup comprises eight pieces based on vintage workwear shapes, designed with winter warmth, freedom of movement and layered styling in mind.
One coat, two silhouettes
At the center of the collection is the padded 2-way oversized work coat. Its hem folds inward to create two silhouettes: a long coat and a short coverall.
A three-layer bonded polyester ripstop fabric and internal padding provide water repellency, wind resistance and warmth. A corduroy collar and large pockets bring traditional workwear details to a modern outerwear piece.
The adjustable length changes how the coat can actually be worn, rather than serving merely as decoration—an example of Engineered Garments’ approach to considering form and function together.
Winter textures meet workwear
Inspired by military flight jackets, the cozy melton parka combines a fabric reminiscent of vintage wool with a short length and ribbed cuffs and hem, creating a rounded, relaxed silhouette.
The fleece utility jacket applies soft boa fleece to the sturdy construction of a work blouson. Pockets on the front and back, along with contrasting materials on the sleeves and pockets, make its practical design even more pronounced.
Reinterpreting the American work vest, the oversized fleece hooded vest features a sculpted hood and multiple pockets. It can serve as a layering piece, worn either under clothing or as lightweight outerwear.
The character of contrasting materials
Inspired by 1970s vintage cable sweaters, the cable crewneck cardigan joins different knit patterns like patchwork. Voluminous mélange yarn gives even the solid-colored knit a richly textured, dimensional surface.
The pants lineup has two styles: super-wide utility warm pants, based on 1970s utility pants with generous proportions and a brushed lining; and fleece wide warm pants, which reinterpret the construction of climbing pants in boa fleece.
Both retain the practicality of workwear and outdoor pants while adopting relaxed silhouettes suited to everyday styling.
A new accessory joins the lineup
For the first time, the collaboration includes an accessory. A 2-way tote bag combining nylon, corduroy and boa fabric extends the clothing’s use of materials and practical design to a bag.
Three exterior pockets, interior storage and a strap that converts the bag from a tote to a shoulder bag show attention not just to the mix of materials but also to everyday use.
GU returns to South Korea
GU first reached South Korean consumers when it entered the market in 2018, but closed all its physical stores in 2020, about two years later.
Some items were subsequently sold through Uniqlo’s online store, but opportunities to buy the various GU collaborative collections released in Japan directly in South Korea were limited. The brand’s continuing stream of intriguing collaborations remained difficult to access.
Having demonstrated their popularity with two earlier collaborations, Engineered Garments and GU are making their third collection officially available in South Korea as well—a notable aspect of this release.
The eight-piece collection goes on sale Monday, October 26, with South Korean prices ranging from 39,900 won to 129,000 won.
Combining Engineered Garments’ refined design with GU’s accessible prices, this collection offers another way to enjoy the practicality of workwear more freely in everyday life.
